Julie is a compassionate and empathetic therapist with a solid sense of presence and rootedness. She holds a Master’s of Science in Social Work from Columbia University in New York City. Julie is also a 200 hour trauma informed yoga teacher certified through Sundara Yoga Therapy in Austin, Texas and is a certified meditation teacher, completing 200 hours of training with Sukha Yoga in Austin, Texas. She has been teaching yoga for over 5 years and has practiced steadily for over 10 years.
Julie specializes in mindfulness based psychotherapies, individual and group therapy, substance use, anxiety, depression, and LGBTQ+ communities. Since completing her graduate degree in 2010, Julie has worked with a variety of communities in New York City, San Francisco, and Austin which has allowed for her to build rapport and connection with diverse populations.
Julie practices from a Harm Reduction approach with her clients as a framework to “meet people where they are” on their journey, whether it be in relation to substance use or any other area of life. She finds value in this approach as it allows clients come just as they are with all parts of themselves as valuable and worthy.
Julie comes from a relational therapeutic approach, meaning the most valuable piece of the journey with her clients is through their relationship. She believes strongly that what happens within the walls of the therapy office can be translated out into the world. Through the process of both traditional talk therapy and somatic approaches (focusing on what is showing up in the body), Julie supports her client’s in leaving the office with tools to show up more authentically in their lives.
As a yoga and mindfulness teacher, Julie blends psychotherapy with spirituality in a way that feels accessible to her clients. She believes in the value of connecting to the body as a way of healing trauma and moving energy, which can manifest both physically and mentally. With her approachable nature, she supports her clients in finding tangible and realistic ways of bridging meditation and mindfulness into their lives. She uses self-compassion and loving kindness as a strong tenet of her work with clients and helps clients to embody this idea through movement, yoga, and meditation practices.
Julie is passionate about continuing her education and learning from thought leaders in the field, both in psychotherapy and yoga, including Peter Levine, Kristin Neff, John Howard, Erinn Lewis and other well respected clinicians locally in Austin. She actively seeks ongoing training and consultation with her colleagues. Julie also holds a license as a Chemical Dependency Counselor, where she focuses not just on the substance use, but on the whole person as well as the underlying core issues that lead them to use substances. She has a strong yoga and meditation practice which has been a strong part of her self care routine.
